Biographical Note

Edward Hildreth Ryder came to Michigan Agricultural College (now Michigan State University) in 1905. His contributions to the university and the city of East Lansing were varied: he was a professor and the head of the History and Political Science Department, the Dean of the first Summer School, the first Dean of the Liberal Arts division (1925-1934), mayor of the city (1918-1925), and a member of the People’s Church. Ryder retired in 1934 due to ill health. He was born August 9, 1871 and died June 22, 1939. Georgia Smyth Ryder was born May 12, 1871 in Marshall, Michigan. Among her many activities, Georgia Ryder was a president of the Faculty Folk Club and the East Lansing Women’s Society. She was a charter member of People’s Church, as well as the East Lansing Missionary Society. Georgia Ryder died in 1955.

Their daughter, Ruth Ryder St. John, graduated from Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) in 1936.
