Historical Note

English classes have been taught at MSU since the beginning of the university. The Department of English has had many names over the years: Department of English Literature (1857-1880), Department of English Language and Literature (1880-1891), Department of English and Modern Languages (1891-1932), English Language and Speech (1932-1937), and English Department (1937-1944). In 1944 the School of Science and Arts was created and consisted of four divisions with various departments under them. The Division of Language and Literature contained the English Department. In 1963 the School of Science and Arts became the College of Arts and Letters and was reorganized eliminating the divisions but keeping the various departments The English department continues to be administered by the college today.
