Historical Note

The James H. and Mary B. Quello Center for Telecommunication Management and Law (Quello Center) was founded in 1998 under the Department of Media and Information in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University. The Center is supported through an endowment in honor of James and Mary Quello.

James Henry Quello (April 21,1914-January 24, 2010) was born to the parents of Italian immigrants in Larium, Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. Quello attended Michigan State College (now Michigan State University) graduating in 1935 with his B.A. While at Michigan State, he met his future wife, Mary, and they were married on September 14, 1937. After returning from military service in World War II, Quello worked at Detroit radio stations and eventually became vice president of WJR. In addition, he was appointed and served on the Detroit Housing and Urban Renewal Commission for 21 years. Quello served as a commissioner of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) from 1974-1998. In 1993, Quello was appointed acting chair of the FCC by President Bill Clinton.

In 1998, Quello assisted James Spaniolo, Dean of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, in the development of the James H. and Mary B. Quello Center for Telecommunication Management and Law at Michigan State University.

Quello was the recipient of many awards and honors including the Distinguished MSU Alumni Award (1998) and an honorary Doctor of Humanities (1977) from MSU and an honorary Doctor of Public Service (1975) from Northern Michigan University.

James H. Quello died on January 24, 2010.
