Historical Note

The Secretary for Academic Governance was created as a separate office under the Provost in 1956. Before 1956, responsibility for its duties was a function of the President’s Office. The office has a faculty standing committee on university curriculum, which prior to 1964, was known as the All-College or All-University Committee on Course and Curricular Changes.

Scope and Contents note

The collection spans from 1930 to 1981, with the majority of the documents dated between 1950 and 1981. As a result of its placement in the University bureaucracy and the span of years covered, this collection contains much information dealing with the concerns facing the University through time. Perhaps the most noteworthy contained herein revolves around the issue of reorganization and the collection of the by-laws of the various colleges comprising Michigan State University. Equally important, however, is the material pertaining to the censure of Trustee Members Bob Repos and Clair White. Included in this is the controversial booklet (See Academic Subject. Salaries), and the issue of Academic Freedom.

The collection is divided into three main topic areas: academic subject, committee, and personnel. Each of these is further subdivided into smaller groupings of topics and, if necessary, by years within these topics. With one small exception, the collection is filed alphabetically by topic, and then chronologically. The only exception to this pattern is found in Box 595, files 9, 10, 11, and 12, which pertain to the President of the University. These files are arranged chronologically by tenure.

In 2012, some additional materials were added as a separate series.

Processing Information

The Secretary for Academic Governance serves as a clearinghouse for various administrative bodies and committees. As a result of this position in the University bureaucracy, much of the material originally in this collection has been transferred to eight other record groups. Of the eighteen boxes originally in this collection, slightly more than four remain. Those scholars using this collection should keep in mind the possibility of having to refer to other record groups for the information sought. For example, material pertaining to the Faculty Grievance Officer (Box 595, file 5) is also found in record group UA 14.6.5, the University Committee on Faculty Affairs, to whom the Selection Committee reported; material pertaining to the reorganization of the University (Box 522, files 51 & 52) has material of relevance in UA 14.3. Finally, material dealing with the All-Events Building is placed in files labeled Committee, Advisory, and Lecture-Concert Series.
