Biographical Note

Harry R. Swain (1893-1975) was born in Indiana to John R. and Emma Swain. He lived in Harrisville, Alcona, Michigan from where he entered military service as a private during World War I. He was a member of the 339th Infantry which was part of the American Expeditionary Forces North Russia from August 1918 until April 1920. Many American soldiers from Michigan served in AEF North Russia which was nicknamed the Polar Bear Expedition. Swain died in 1975 in Flushing, Michigan.

The Harry Swain journal contains addresses, lists, inventories, and accounts of day-to-day life as a soldier as part of the American Expeditionary Forces North Russia, nicknamed the Polar Bear Expedition.
