Biography

Larry Bielat is a 1960 graduate of MSU. He was a three year letter winner as a quarterback with the MSU football team. After graduating, Bielat coached both high school and college football before returning to MSU in 1982 as a coach on George Perles’ staff where he remained through the 1990 season. He began working with the Alumni Association in 1993, and since 1994 has been the color analyst for Spartan football games on the Spartan Radio Network.

Scope and Contents note

This collection contains one program, one poster, 151 photographs (147 regular plus 4 oversize), and 25 postcards dealing with Michigan State University history collected by Larry Bielat. The photographs contain many individual photographs of athletes from 1929-1944. There are also many early photographs of the football team and a variety of pictures from the marching band spanning over thirty years. Of special interest are several photographs of MSU football coach Muddy Waters (1980-1982), including an oversized photo of Waters with his coaching staff. Some of the photographs were used in the book Spartan Football: 100 Seasons of Gridiron Glory, which Bielat co-wrote with Ken Hammond. The postcards fall between the years 1906 and 1910 and show a wide variety of campus life including the annual circus, the class tug-of-war, and individuals from the baseball, football, track and field, and basketball teams.
